Apex's own history page says the town grew from 5,000 people in 1990 to more than 60,000, and the houses show it. Census Reporter's tables from the 2024 ACS five-year survey count 26,500 homes with a median build year of 2008. Sixty-nine percent date from 2000 or later, 27 percent from 1980 to 1999, and only 4 percent from before that. So two waves are aging at once. Houses from 1980 to 1999 are on their second round of deck and fence work, and the 2000 to 2009 group, about 23 percent of homes, is reaching the point where builder-grade stairs, doors and trim give out.
The town's name is a lesson in water. Apex was named for the highest point on the Chatham Railroad between Richmond and Jacksonville, and the town notes that rain falling on one side of Salem Street flows to the Neuse River while rain on the other side drains to the Cape Fear. Every roof in town does the same job on a smaller scale. When a gutter sags or pulls loose, water dumps at the foundation and splashes the siding. On August 2, 2019, a weather observer measured 5.29 inches of rain near Highway 55 and Highway 64, and roads flooded across Apex and Cary.
Downtown is the old railroad town. The Apex Historic District is on the National Register, with a period of significance from about 1870 to 1950 and more than 150 contributing structures, Queen Anne and Craftsman houses among them. Fires in 1905 and 1911 pushed merchants to rebuild Salem Street in brick, and the Union Depot at 220 North Salem dates to 1914. In the Small Town Character Overlay, the residential standards that bind condos and apartments ask for replacement facade windows of the same trim size and character as the original, and the town strongly recommends its design guidelines for single-family homes. We fit windows and casing to match.
Fence rules sit in Section 8.2.7 of Apex's Unified Development Ordinance. Fences top out at seven feet including posts and finials, and at 48 inches in front yards. The good side has to face the street or the adjoining lot, chain link is limited to side and rear yards in residential districts, and fences are not allowed around detention or retention ponds. Private fences also stay out of subdivision buffers unless the buffer was designed with one. The town's planning FAQ says a fence can go up to your property line but not on it, and suggests leaving some room so you can maintain it.

Yes, when it is a straight swap. The Town of Apex permit sheet says replacing windows and doors needs no permit as long as they stay in the same location and are the same size. A permit is required, whatever the cost, when the work touches load-bearing members such as headers, so widening an opening is a different job from swapping a unit.
Walk around and check the gutters, downspouts, siding and any shingles you can see from the ground for dents, cracks and missing pieces. Apex gets real hail: the NOAA Storm Events Database shows two inch hail at Hunter Street and Highway 55 on May 31, 2019. We repair damaged siding, rehang or replace dented gutters, and fix shingles and flashing.
