Siding

Siding is a raincoat. Holes let the weather in.

Siding keeps rain off the wall behind it, and one bad section is enough to let water in. Vinyl cracks when something hits it and comes loose in high wind. Hardboard siding, common on houses from the 1980s and 90s, swells and softens along its bottom edges once the paint fails. Woodpeckers and storm debris punch holes. Behind any of those openings, the house wrap and sheathing start taking water they were never meant to see, and that is where the real damage happens.

A repair is only as good as how it ties into what is already there. With vinyl, the damaged pieces are unlocked from the course below and new ones snapped in, hung loose enough to expand in the sun. With lap siding, boards are cut back to a stud, new ones fitted with staggered joints, and every joint and opening flashed or sealed. While the wall is open we check the wrap and sheathing, because covering soft sheathing with new siding just hides the problem.

Chimney chases are a common trouble spot. They stand tall, catch wind from every side, and get looked at less than the walls you see every day. One of our jobs was a two-story chase with holes and damaged panels, stripped and re-sided top to bottom so it sheds water again. Color is the tricky part of any partial repair, since old siding fades in the sun, so we find the closest match. For bigger jobs we install new siding on a full wall or the whole house.

07 / FAQ

Siding Install & Repair questions, answered.

Yes. Damaged vinyl panels can be unlocked and swapped without disturbing the rest, and lap siding can be cut back and patched in. The catch is color, since siding fades. One trick is to move original pieces from a hidden wall to the front and put the new ones out of sight.

Woodpeckers are a common cause, especially on chimney chases and high gable walls. Storm debris and string trimmers account for most of the rest. Whatever made the hole, close it up soon, because rain gets behind siding through surprisingly small openings.

Yes. Whenever siding comes off, we look at the house wrap and sheathing underneath. Torn wrap gets patched. Soft or stained sheathing gets replaced before any new siding goes up, so the repair does not seal the problem inside the wall.
