Gutters & Downspouts

Rain has to go somewhere. We decide where.

Gutters work on a simple idea: catch the water at the roof edge and move it to a spot where it does no harm. Getting that right comes down to a few details. The gutter needs a slight, steady fall toward each downspout, roughly a quarter inch every ten feet, so water never sits in it. It hangs on hangers screwed through the fascia into the rafter tails, spaced close enough that a load of wet leaves cannot pull it down.

Downspouts are where most gutter systems fall short. One downspout trying to drain too much roof overflows in every hard storm, and a downspout that dumps right at the foundation just moves the problem down a level. We place downspouts where the roof actually sends its water, and add extensions or splash blocks that carry it out away from the house. Red clay soil takes water in slowly, so water left at the foundation tends to sit there instead of soaking away.

We also look at what the gutter hangs on. Behind an old gutter that leaked or overflowed, the fascia board is often soft, and a new gutter screwed into rotted wood will not stay put. Soft fascia gets replaced first. Under big pines and oaks, larger downspouts help keep needles and leaves moving through. On a house built in the 2000s, the original gutters are now 15 to 25 years old, which is when sagging runs and leaking seams tend to show up.

07 / FAQ

Gutter Installation questions, answered.

It depends on how much roof drains to each run and how steep it is. As a rule, a long run needs a downspout at each end, and any corner that overflows in a hard rain is a sign one more is needed. We look at the roof and place them where the water actually goes.

Several feet out from the foundation, on ground that slopes away from the house. Extensions or splash blocks do the job in most yards. With red clay soil, water left beside the foundation soaks in slowly and tends to pond, which is how crawl spaces and basements get damp.

Yes, when it needs it. Old gutters that overflowed for a long time often leave the fascia soft. A new gutter needs solid wood to fasten into, so rotted sections are cut out and replaced before the new gutter goes up.

Just about anything on the honey-do list. Repairs, drywall, trim carpentry, mounting, doors, fixtures, and outdoor assembly like basketball hoops. If you're not sure, just ask.
