Knightdale nearly doubled in a decade, from 11,401 residents in 2010 to 19,435 in 2020, after getting its own high school in 2004 and a highway bypass in 2006. The housing count follows the same curve. Census Reporter's ACS 2024 5-year tables show about 8,025 homes, nearly three in four of them (74 percent) from 2000 onward and 45 percent from 2010 onward. The 29 percent built from 2000 to 2009 are reaching the age when original fences, decks and caulk give out, and the newer half is due for its first touch-ups: nail pops in drywall, scuffed paint and loose stair rails.
Knightdale does not require a permit to put up a fence, but Section 7.6 of its Unified Development Ordinance is specific. On house and townhouse lots, front yard fences stop at 4 feet and must be wood picket, wrought iron or a look-alike that is no more than 50 percent opaque. Side and rear fences can reach 6 feet, and anything over 4 feet must be wood or something similar. Chain link, wire mesh and woven wire are out. Fences also have to stay out of public easements and sight triangles, and a lot with floodplain needs a floodplain development permit.
The town grew from a rail depot on land donated by Henry Haywood Knight and was incorporated in 1927. Its 2007 Old Town plan describes a 1940s downtown fire that took much of the early architecture, and First Avenue houses with picket fences, big lots, outbuildings and mature shade trees. The same plan says Knightdale area soils weather from Rolesville Granite, which breaks the surface as outcrops where soil is thin and shows up as rectangular blocks in old chimneys and foundations. Where rock sits that close, a post hole or deck footing can hit stone before it reaches depth.
Knightdale has been a Tree City USA for 25 years as of March 2026, and its trees come down when summer storms hit. NOAA storm reports show trees and power lines down along Knightdale Boulevard on July 18, 2020, several trees down on Old Knight Road on July 19, 2016, and wind on April 26, 2022 that blew shingles off an apartment building near North Smithfield Road and Aragon Drive. Quarter size hail fell near Knightdale Boulevard and Village Squire Court in May 2009. Further back, Hurricane Fran in 1996 left damage across all 891 square miles of Wake County.

No. Knightdale's UDO caps front yard fences on house and townhouse lots at 4 feet, in wood picket, wrought iron or a similar material, with no more than 50 percent opacity. Six feet is the limit in side and rear yards, and chain link or wire mesh is not allowed. The Town does not require a fence permit.
Two offices share it. Knightdale takes building permits through the Wake County Permit Portal, and Town staff review and issue them and handle zoning and setback checks. Wake County's planning and inspections department then does the structural and building inspections on the Town's behalf. Wake County publishes submittal guides for deck permits.
